Name: Sylvain Jose Gautier
Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Canon Point: Before Azure Moon, Chapter 21
Age: 26
History: Game | Sylvain
Personality:
"You know, Professor, I think I'm going to like it at the Officer's Academy. There are beautiful girls as far as the eye can see..."
At first glance, Sylvain comes across as flippant, and a skirt-chaser. In fact, his unique, special ability is even called "Philanderer", and gives him a stat boost in battle if he's standing next to a female ally, and if the player has chosen a female Byleth to play as, then he'll join their house without any further requirements being met. Even considering his less than stellar reputation, his apparent easygoing nature, and how well-spoken he is does help him ensure that if he has a bad reputation, then at least it's well-deserved. He's a flirt, and will freely say whatever he thinks whoever he's flirting with wants to hear at any given moment, even if he's not necessarily trying to take them out, for better or worse.
"And there are those rumors of the current regent being too busy chasing the ladies to bother with governing. Don't worry, I get the irony."
Despite appearing to be carefree, and as though nothing he says or does matters, he's very self-aware in regards to the impression he leaves on people, almost to the point of being self-depreciating about it. There's certainly more to the appearance he puts forward than he likes letting on, and not many people who he allows to see past that front. His support conversations usually stop at B, despite coming across as an open and friendly person, which shows that he's not nearly as open in regards to himself as he would have one believe.
"You know what? I'm a bit jealous. The whole time you were growing up, you never knew you had a Crest. You were free. Nobody pretended to like you. I kind of hate you for that..."
Growing up, as the heir to a noble household, and because he has a Crest, there were always very high expectations put on his shoulders. As a result, he's bitter about that - to say the least - and outright hateful of those he deems as the sort to try and take advantage of who he is, even going so far as to say that he hates Byleth for being able to live freely despite having a Crest of their own, and alluding to the fact that, to an extent, he hates women who only want him as an easy way into the nobility. After all, if they have his child, and that child has a Crest, then that child will have a claim to being the next head of House Gautier after him. It's a vicious cycle - he was given everything growing up, while his brother was neglected and grew resentful of and abusive to him, so he can't help but be suspicious of everyone, and slow to trust. If he doesn't open up as a person, then there's no reason to get hurt when he isn't seen as a person.
"We've been friends since we were kids. I'm gonna be there for him all the way to the end."
Even despite how flippant he is in his personal relationships, and how duplicitous he can come across, once he decides to be loyal to someone, he doesn't go back on that resolution. When Dimitri seems as though he's past the point of redemption, he stands by him, and later on, once the war is over, should he marry someone he allowed to get close to him over the course of the game, he gives up his cheating ways and sticks with them, even so far as to being a noteworthy father and husband.
In those same endings, he demonstrates just how focused he is, once he has something to set his mind to. He puts an end to a border conflict that's been stewing for centuries with diplomacy instead of war, and he upsets a long-standing social order by showing that the Crest system really doesn't matter nearly as much as everyone once believed. All that in addition to standing behind his childhood friends through the war, and afterwards, with outreach and restoration programs.
Annette: "What I really want to talk about is your behavior during our training sessions. When we're sparring, you're always passing on great opportunities to get the edge on me. It's almost as though you're going out of your way to make me think you're incapable!"
Sylvain: "Nah, I just like giving other people the spotlight."
When it comes down to it, Sylvain is very capable, seeming to excel at whatever he tries, whether that's fighting with a lance or axe, using magic, or employing diplomacy. He has an easy knack for picking up things, and he knows it, though he tries very hard not to show it.
He says he likes giving other people the spotlight, and while that does seem to be true, he also hates getting attention and praise for things he doesn't feel he deserves. After all, he's been praised for a long time simply for existing, how is he to know what is or isn't genuine? At least if he lets others have the spotlight, he knows for certain they deserve any accolades that come from their acts.
"Take it form a guy who does his fair share of pretending to be someone he's not..."
Sylvain comes across as a very open person, but that's a very carefully constructed facade. In reality, he's incredibly secretive, hiding his true nature behind a shallow personality, just friendly enough that he's unlikely to be outright hated, but just off-putting enough that others are unlikely to want to delve past the surface. If an attempt is made anyway, he very quickly tries to push them away - and if continued attempts are made, then, eventually, he might consider letting someone in to see the darker parts of himself, all that deep-seated bitterness and self-loathing that make up the core of who he is.
Abilities & Skills: The "Overall" subsection on his wiki page outlines his particular proficiencies in battle. In addition:
- Crest of Gautier: As heir to house Gautier, Sylvain possesses the family Crest. His particular Crest "Occasionally raises Mt when using combat arts." In a roleplay situation, as opposed to a game mechanic, it implies that there is a force at play that will strengthen any fighting techniques that go above and beyond what might be considered the norm.
- Dark Knight: As of entering the game, he will be classed as a Dark Knight. This is a cavalry class, specializing in the use of lances and strong dark magics. At this point, he'd have access to his full available spell list.
- Lance of Ruin / Ruined Sky: He possesses the The Lance of Ruin, which is a Heroic Relic passed down in his house, that only someone with the Crest of Gautier can wield. If someone without the crest attempts to use it, the lance will take over, transforming them into a "demonic beast". Sylvain is immune to this influence, as he has the Crest, and can therefore take full advantage of the lance and it's advanced properties. Ruined Sky is an advanced lance technique, available only to someone with his crest and the Lance of Ruin. It is particularly effective against flying enemies and dragons.
Inventory/Companions:
Clothes and Armor - Literally just what he wears on a daily basis.
The Lance of Ruin - His Relic. While usually a magical weapon, as outlined above, in Aefenglom it'll be reduced to just a really nice lance that glows and, notably, wiggles and makes clicking/chittering noises, particularly when Sylvain is the one who holds it. Spooky.
Silver Axe - Just another weapon he's proficient in.
Chess Set - Gotta have something entertaining to do other than flirt, right?
Choice: Witch
Reason: Despite his cavalierattitude archetype, Sylvain actually is rather sharp and has quite a lot of skill in magic already, so he'd take to the witch casting better than one might think. Additionally, he looks out for his friends whenever possible, and this role gives him the means to do so - if they're monsters, he can bond with them and temper their more feral impulses, and if they're witches, he can help them study and grow in their own magic uses.
